LaQ Jewelry Designs specializes in symbolism in design; working closely with customers to design exclusive collections. From exquisitely personal pieces like unique engagement/wedding bands which capture elements of a couple's relationship, to the Susan B. Anthony collection, and the Vote collection — LaQ designs capture a sentiment, a concept.
By utilizing skills as a goldsmith and a product designer, LaQ can develop and create fine jewelry adaptable for individual pieces, small or large scale production. This combination of fine-arts metalsmithing and industrial-design manufacturing experience has brought success to ventures designing exclusive collections for major wholesalers.
LaQ's design experience includes: Lead Designer for an international manufacturing company of finished jewelry and findings; representation of the company at international exhibitions and trade shows (Hong Kong, Vicenza, Las Vegas, New York); work with vendors and customers both in manufacturing and wholesale/retail aspects; over a decade of teaching at the University of Rochester Memorial Art Gallery; and over 30 years of design and fabrication of fine jewelry.
About the Artist
My design process begins with developing a concept that can be translated into symbols, which create a statement. The work reflects my intrigue with the use of symbolism in art, especially 13th to 15th century western European paintings and sculpture.
Whether designing an award, a sculpture, or an organization's signature piece I strive to incorporate the essence of the mission statement into an artistic expression that allows the observer to discover the meaning.
When I approach a commission, I try to challenge myself to maintain my own developed style and still design some aspect of the recipient's personality or experiences into the piece.
Working within the criteria of aesthetics, function, and budget, my goal is to create a very personal heirloom.
Success is achieved when the piece has direct connection to that person's life. I choose to do that figuratively or literally through the use of metal, stones, or any object that may be precious to the owner. Communication, insight, and interpretation become my tools whether I am working with students or clients.
